Deep in the vast and rugged wilderness of British Columbia, where the number of rivers far exceeds the number of roads, forests of Douglas Fir and Western Red Cedar trees grow. It is here that the massive timbers used in our homes are harvested. Nourished by Mother Nature for many years, the trees of this region grow straight and sturdy. At our sites in British Columbia, our master log builders peel and scribe fit each and every log by hand. For over twenty-seven years our logsmiths have been creating old-fashioned "works of art." Employing centuries old methods of log home construction, Highland supplies a log shell package that includes exterior log walls, log floor joists (second floor), log ridge beams, log purlins, log trusses, interior and exterior log posts, log stair material, as well as interior and exterior log railing material. The tight grained logs used are 12 to 15 inches in diameter and are full-length with no vertical butt joints. The corner construction used is a "V" notch, which removes most of the sapwood providing an extremely tight weatherproof corner section. We include insulation between the courses of log. All of the tie-beams, floor joists, ridge beams, purlins and top plate logs are slabbed to match the roof pitch and receive dimensional framing and finished decking materials. Highland logs are graded number one or better and can be TPI stamped if needed to meet local code requirements. Also included are steel through-bolts and drift-pins. Window and door openings are pre-cut with keyways to allow for settling and flared for buck boards and trim. The logs are pre-cut for electrical outlets and light switches, and are pre-drilled for electrical chaseways. Decorative log applications, such as our arched openings, swept corners and log mantels are common in Highland designs. The complete log home is pre-built, disassembled, and delivered to your site only to be reassembled by the craftsmen that built it.
